1944 saw the greatest effort by the Air Defence of Great Britain in its history. Operation Overlord, the invasion of France was launched on 6 June 1944. In May of 1943 Royal Air Force Bomber Command 617 Squadron carried out a most unusual and daring raid. Eighteen Lancaster aircraft bombed and breached the great dams in Ruhr Valley lakes.

Ruhr Valley supplied hydro-electrical power to factories. These factories heavily engaged in Germany’s industrial war production.

On the 28th of June 2012, the Royal Air Force unveiled a memorial in Greene Park. Honouring Bomber Command & the 55,537 airmen lost during the Second World War.
