An extraordinary journey from the UK to Vietnam on the most unlikely of motorcycles, a 1941 Matchless. The bike, a WWII veteran only recently repatriated from Burma, is restored and prepared for the expedition by its rider, Gordon May, and a team of friends.

Riding solo, Gordon heads across eastern Europe, the Caucasus and the Karakum Desert then over the Kunjerab Pass, the world’s highest international border crossing. Enduring ice, snow and tropical heat, he and his Matchless survive backbreaking terrain, petrol shortages, crazy traffic, a sandstorm of biblical proportions and a major earthquake. Along the way, he visits the wonders of Bukhara and Samarkand, camps alongside the remote Pamir Highway, rides the length of the majestic Karakoram Highway, traverses the plains of northern India and Nepal then wends through the jungles of Myanmar. Passing the towering karsts of Laos, Gordon finally makes it to Vietnam, travelling the stunning coastal highway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Overland To Vietnam is not only a motorcycle travel adventure, it is a testament to the kindness, humour and genuine hospitality of the many people Gordon encounters on his 11,500 mile odyssey.

“To Egypt… on a Bantam! Are you joking?” This was the response to author Gordon May’s idea to ride one of BSA’s diminutive 2-stroke motorcycles, a modified 1952 D1 called Peggy, to the land of the Pharaohs. Not to be discouraged, he nevertheless set off on his quest.

The first attempt at the ride, which took them across the Swiss Alps, ended prematurely in north eastern Italy due to an engine failure. However, Gordon recovered his spirits, set about rebuilding the engine and six months later, having learned from his mistakes, set off once more.

This time, crossing through Tunisia and Libya, the ride was a success and after many challenges, Gordon and Peggy jubilantly made it to The Pyramids in Cairo. The return trip, via Jordan and Syria, was also not without its tests, but he was able to safely return the Bantam to the UK.

As well as illustrating the depth of human kindness and hospitality often shown to visitors in the countries en route, including Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria and Jordan, Overland To Egypt also gives a rare insight into this region just months before the tumultuous changes which occurred as a result of the Arab Spring and the 2011 war in Libya.

A total of 8,400 miles from Manchester, UK to Chennai, India, in just under seven weeks. A challenge for most vehicles, but on an antiquated 1953 Royal Enfield ….

“Your bike belongs in a museum, not on the road,” was how one doubter tried to discourage Gordon May from undertaking this journey. Despite intense heat in excess of 40C, a crash in the Baluchistan desert and some of the worst roads and driving standards on the planet, Gordon’s old Bullet did indeed make it triumphantly to Chennai.

In his book, Gordon describes in detail the restoration of his motorcycle and the build up to departure, the larger-than-life characters he met and the many challenges he faced. He also recounts the more personal highs and lows life on the road. Above all, Overland To India is a heartwarming story that illustrates human kindness and hospitality and encourages other riders to take their own motorcycles on a long-distance journey.
