Description
An extraordinary journey from the UK to Vietnam on the most unlikely of motorcycles, a 1941 Matchless. The bike, a WWII veteran only recently repatriated from Burma, is restored and prepared for the expedition by its rider, Gordon May, and a team of friends.
Riding solo, Gordon heads across eastern Europe, the Caucasus and the Karakum Desert then over the Kunjerab Pass, the world’s highest international border crossing. Enduring ice, snow and tropical heat, he and his Matchless survive backbreaking terrain, petrol shortages, crazy traffic, a sandstorm of biblical proportions and a major earthquake. Along the way, he visits the wonders of Bukhara and Samarkand, camps alongside the remote Pamir Highway, rides the length of the majestic Karakoram Highway, traverses the plains of northern India and Nepal then wends through the jungles of Myanmar. Passing the towering karsts of Laos, Gordon finally makes it to Vietnam, travelling the stunning coastal highway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Overland To Vietnam is not only a motorcycle travel adventure, it is a testament to the kindness, humour and genuine hospitality of the many people Gordon encounters on his 11,500 mile odyssey.
